The things pictured here has everything to do with Abraham’s life. “You who haven’t been in labour with a child” reminds us of Sarah’s frustration in not having any children. “The place of your tent” is a reminder of the long years where Abraham had no permanent address. “Your descendants” – speaks about the fulfilment of God’s promises that rested on this one man and his wife. “I will make of you a great nation” – God had promised, “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” {Gen 12v3}

The climax of this beautiful Servant Song is now here. The despised, rejected, afflicted, wounded, sacrificed, silent lamb of God, has now become conqueror. In Hebrew it reads “therefore, I will apportion to Him the many, and the strong he will apportion as spoil”. There’s no suggestion that the highest place should be shared with anybody. …

We must be careful how we think about this phrase “it pleased the Lord to bruise Him”. The terms, “God’s will” and “God’s pleasure” are synonymous in this text. This verse points out that it was God’s will and purpose to bring His Salvation to people like us, through the bruising, crushing of the Lord Jesus. His sacrificial offering as “God’s lamb” and Him becoming sin for us satisfied the demands of a righteous and a Holy God.

These verses just keep revealing truths about Jesus. No sin had ever stained His life, no deceitful thought ever entered His heart, no deceitful thought ever came out of His mouth. Let’s look back together to when the Messiah was crucified. We can see Joseph of Arimathea making his way through the streets of Jerusalem and going on through security that was surrounding the resident Governor, showing to us that he must have had influence in those circles. He asked one of the most sensitive questions at a very strange hour in history as he asked for the body of Jesus.

Calvary was a mock trial with false witnesses and horrendous beatings, but Christ refused to confess the sins he had never committed. These tormenters showed no restraint whatsoever. Pilate said that Jesus was innocent and was just a person, but the people cried out “let Him be crucified”. The judgement of the Sanhedrin and the people was that The Lord Jesus should die. So, Pilate, to keep his job, let them have their way. Poor man, shortly afterwards he lost his job anyway.

One of my favourite writers was a church pastor named J. Sidlow Baxter who served The Lord in a Baptist church in Edinburgh. He explains that there are “completive parallels” in Isaiah 53. These are when the second member of the pair extends or completes the thought in the first member. He shows that the exact centre of the 24 parallels is, “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent”. Here is the lamb, right at the centre of it all.

Join us as Pastor Pete Dale encourages us to see that some burdens we carry are things God never intended us to carry. Stress, anxiety and worry drains us of emotional energy but there is a key that unlocks everything to set us free.

Key Scriptures: Philippians 4:4-9 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus….”

In November 1854, William Holman Hunt was talking to his fellow artist, Sir John Everett Millais, the story of the scapegoat in Lev 16v21 and said that he would like to paint it. Bearing all the sins of the children of Israel, the scapegoat was then sent away into the wilderness. Hunt eventually went to Israel and at the risk of being robbed, he painted each day until sunset at the edge of the Dead Sea. His painting “The Scapegoat” was shown in the Royal Academy in 1856 where it was criticised and misunderstood.

Let’s be honest folks, our own sin and the sin in others, has brought us a lot of grief and sorrow. Not just in our lives but we see its effect around the world, but The Lord Jesus came and took that grief and sorrow. He shouldered it for us. We remember when He was in Capernaum in Peter’s house and seeing his mother in-law sick with a fever, He touches her hand, and the fever leaves her. …

To think that the Messiah was disfigured, marred, and beaten beyond all recognition seems incredible. Almost beyond accepting that God would send His Son to the womb of a peasant woman in Galilee. His Son growing up on earth “as a tender plant” and as a “root out of dry ground” wasn’t something that people easily believed. John 1v46 says “can anything good come out of Nazareth?” …

A sceptic once spoke up in a certain conversation and said, “other people have suffered just as much as Christ”. A man who used to be a drunk, and wasn’t very academic but had life experience, pointed to the man of this verse. He pointed out that Christ’s face was marred more than any other man and His form than any other individual. …

You would have thought that God’s people would have run as fast as they could and as far away from Babylon as possible, but their journey was unhurried, it was more cool, calm and collected. They went out with decorum with no opposition, no one pursuing them as before. God promises that He will go before them and will be behind them. We have some great things to learn here.

Let’s take another look at this verse as this reminds us also of another watchperson. Her name was Anna {Luke 2v36-38} She too was another who knew the writings of Isaiah. Simeon focused on the comfort of Israel and the salvation of God reaching to the ends of the earth through the death and resurrection of Christ. The emphasis from Anna was on the redemption of Jerusalem.
