Fan The Flame (Day 145)

Isaiah 66v19 “I will set a sign among them, and those among them who escape I will send to the nations – to Tarshish, to the Libyans and Lydians {famous archers} to Tubal and Greece and to the distant Islands that have not heard of My fame or seen My glory. They will proclaim My glory among the nations.”

Although Isaiah doesn’t tell us what the sign is that God will set among His people, some commentators agree that this all points to the cross of Jesus. Like Isaiah, those who first preached the message of the cross were those who had escaped the judgement of God by being faithful to His word. It was such, that it was His own disciples, that Jesus committed the spread of the gospel in Matt 29v18-20 and upon them first came the Holy Spirit’s power, to be witnesses to Christ in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth – Acts 1v8. Notice that Peter saw himself as having been liberated when he spoke to the Jews at Pentecost “be saved from this perverse generation” – Acts 2v40.

The gospel goes out to Tarshish in Spain, then south to Libya and to Lydia, which was famous for its archers, to Tubal in the far north {probably Turkey} and to Javan in Greece. The Islands represent the far corners of the earth. In all these places there are people who have not heard anything about Jesus or seen His glory. The gospel declares many things but at its heart, spreads the Lord’s fame and shows His glory.

We want this for Salt Church, don’t we? We want His fame to spread from our lives into our communities. We want His gospel shared, people saved, church growing, alive and thriving, so that we may know Him and see His glory together.

Let’s keep God’s fame and glory at the heart of all we do.
